Chapter 14 - Clay

Clay hadn’t said a word since Ezra had cut him short. They rode in silence. Clay was afraid to turn the radio up, because he knew he should be saying something, and he didn’t want to insult Ezra any further by hiding behind the music. The silence was painful, though.

His mind kept replaying every moment he had gotten wrong during the disastrous date. Pretty much everything. Everything had gone wrong after they had sat down at the table.

Why were you afraid of those idiots?

He knew the answer, though. Firemen worked in high-danger, high-pressure situations and needed to depend on each other. Extreme trust and camaraderie was needed for that to work well enough to keep them all safe.

It had taken months, and several shouting matches, for the men on Laura’s shift to get used to working with her.

Clay coming out would be way worse for the morale at the station. Laura had her own bathroom, and was happily married to a teacher. She had kids. Despite the occasional joke, no one expected Laura to have any interest in anyone she worked with.

Things would be different for Clay. The men would be uncomfortable in the communal shower in the men’s locker room. The men would be uncomfortable with their off-color jokes. The camaraderie would be damaged. The trust would be scarred. Someone would get hurt.

He flinched when Ezra leaned forward and turned up the radio.

Unlike they had at the restaurant, the feelings of the other firefighters felt like distant problems in his truck. The only thing that mattered was making things right with Ezra.

Clay almost wished that he could just walk away from the guy. It would be so much simpler. It’s not like they had done anything more than one kiss. If Clay could have convinced himself that the kiss hadn’t meant anything, he would have cut things off.

But, there was something more going on.

The two had just clicked while working together. Ezra had dragged Clay into conversations with people in the town that Clay could have never managed on his own. Clay knew that he was a better, more social, happier man with Ezra than without him. And no amount of self-denial could convince him that he wasn’t attracted to every sexy inch of Ezra’s body. From the mesmerizing blue eyes, to the flat, hairless stomach, and the V that lead from Ezra’s hips down into his pants where Clay desperately wanted to go himself.

Idling at a stoplight, Clay wanted to turn left, and take Ezra to his own apartment. To hell with the world. Going straight would take them to Ezra’s house and feel like giving up on something very important.

He just needed to get over his fear of what others thought.

Except what they thought mattered because...

If only Ezra would say something to make the decision easier. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. When the light turned green, he drove straight ahead.

Pulling into the Ezra’s driveway, Clay turned the radio back down. Ezra’s hand was on the door handle, but he hadn’t moved yet.
